Outlook 2016 error when trying to open mailbox

I wanted to share some information for the people finding this post through search engines and are having the same problems I had.

Using Exchange 2010, when upgrading a certain user from Outlook 2007 to Outlook 2016 the user could no longer open his mailbox.

When opening Outlook 2016 in cached mode I would get the message:

Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The file <path>.ost is not an Outlook data file (.ost).

When opening Outlook 2016 without cached mode i would get message:

Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. Network problems are preventing connection to Microsoft Exchange.

However, the mailbox could still be opened in Outlook 2007, and through the browser using OWA.

All mailbox permissions were default, and OWA, ActiveSync, MAPI were enabled.

When adding the profile the ActiveSync settings seemed to be in order because all information was detected automatically.

Other users on the same Exchange 2010 server didn’t have any issues.

Other users on the same computer didn’t have any issues.

Recreating the Outlook profile didn’t make a difference.

Trying on both Windows 7 and Windows 10 gave the same result.

In the “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Logging\RPC Client Access” server log files I noticed an error message every time the user tried to start Outlook:

RpcDispatch: [UnknownUserException] Unable to map userDn ‘/o=Exchange Organization/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/cn=Recipients/cn=Mailbox 123 – Example username 123’
to exchangePrincipal (StoreError=UnknownUser) -> [ObjectNotFoundException] The Active Directory user wasn’t found.

When checking the legacyExchangeDN of the user through adsiedit I noticed it had a trailing space at the end of the name:

‘/o=Exchange Organization/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/cn=Recipients/cn=Mailbox 123 – Example username 123 ‘

After removing the space at the end of the legacyExchangeDN and recreating the Outlook profile the mailbox could be opened again.

FF Url Tool

Do you have multiple internet shortcuts on your desktop and want to open the selected shortcuts  in Firefox tabs?
By default Firefox only opens the first in your selection, so you will end up clicking all the shortcuts one by one.
I thought many other people would have the same problem, but couldn’t find many topics about this issue on the internet.

To solve this problem I made a program called FF Url Tool. Continue reading “FF Url Tool”

Update firmware on Samsung 470 SSD

Today I finally received my new SSD, a 128GB Samsung 470 . I wanted to update the firmware on the drive before I installed everything on it, because when updating the firmware all data on the drive gets erased.

Samsung hasn’t made it easy for their users to update the firmware. The hardest part is to get a bootable USB stick with DOS on it. They don’t tell you how to do this and they just assume you have one lying around. I didn’t happen to have one so I had to look for a guide on how to make one. After a bunch of failed attempts and Vista-only guides I found an easy and simple way at this website.

I’ll describe all the steps you need to take to update the Samsung SSD below.

Teamspeak 3 TTS pack

Here’s a “shorter” version of the default Text To Speech pack that comes with Teamspeak 3. I didn’t like the default pack so I modified it a little to get rid of the long sentences.

Before: ${clientname} entered your channel ${channelname} on ${servername}
After: ${clientname} entered your channel

Medal of Honor Allied Assault Gallery

I was checking out some old files in my pictures folder and found these Medal of Honor Allied Assault screenshots from 2002. The images aren’t very good, but I find the chat log more interesting than the images themselves 🙂 Click below to see the whole gallery.

.Net Framework error “Could not load file or assembly”

Recently I had some trouble with a computer at work. The machine was running Windows XP Professional with the last updates (01-2011) and .Net Framework 3.5 SP1.

The problem was with a program called Pimphony, made by Alcatel. It talks with the Alcatel Omni PCX phone system we have, it shows the user who is calling, missed calls and other things. It always worked fine on this computer up until now.

When trying to start Alcatel Pimphony the following error would show:

Runtime error 8007000b (0x8007000B)
Could not load file or assembly ‘0 bytes loaded from System, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089’ or one of its dependencies.
